Psalm 91 – Word Study

Psalm 91 1-10 Word Study

New American Standard (NAS)

Psalm 91:1 He who dwells (sits, remains) in the shelter (covering, hiding place, secrecy) of the Most
High Will abide (lodge, pass the night) in the shadow (shade, protection) of the Almighty. 2 I will say to
the LORD, “My refuge (shelter) and my fortress (stronghold), My God, in whom I trust (confident,
bold, rely on)! ” 3 For it is He who delivers you from the snare (blind trap) of the trapper, And from the
deadly pestilence (plague). 4 He will cover you with His pinions (feathers), And under His wings
(covering, garment) you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark (a solid wall like
structure raised for defense). 5 You will not be afraid (frightened, fearful) of the terror (fear or great
fear) by night, Or of the arrow that flies by day; 6 Of the pestilence that stalks in darkness (gloom), Or of
the (ruining, devastating) destruction that lays waste at noon. 7 A thousand may fall (abandon,
desert, defect) at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not approach you. 8 You will
only look on with your eyes, And see the recompense (retribution), of the wicked. 9 For you have made
the LORD, my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling (habitation) place. 10 No evil (misery,
distress, injury) will befall (meet or encounter) you, Nor will any plague come near your tent (home).
(A possible translation)
He who sits and remains in the secret hiding place of the Lord will pass through the night under His
protection. I will say to the Lord, “You are my shelter and my stronghold, My God that I boldly rely on.”
It is He who delivers you from the invisible trap of those that are trying to trap you, and from the deadly
plague. He will cover you with his feathers, and under His covering you will take refuge. His truth is a
shield and a sturdy wall that you can hide behind. You will not be fearful of even the greatest fear or the
devastation that happens in the middle of the day. A thousand may desert you and leave, even ten
thousand may leave your side, but nothing will come near you. You will look on with your eyes and see
the retribution that the Lord takes on the wicked. For you have made Him, MY refuge, even the Most
High the place where you live. Because of this, no distress or injury will encounter you, nor will any
plague come near your home.
New Living Translation (NLT)
the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 This I declare about the LORD: He alone is
my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. 3 For he will rescue you from every trap and
protect you from deadly disease. 4 He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection. 5 Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the
arrow that flies in the day. 6 Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes
at midday. 7 Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils
will not touch you. 8 Just open your eyes, and see how the wicked are punished. 9 If you make the LORD
your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, 10 no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near
your home.
